“Responsible for managing social media.” “Helped with customer queries.” These phrases describe duties, not achievements — and they appear on thousands of resumes. Starting every bullet point with a strong action verb makes your experience sound confident, specific and results-driven.
Why action verbs matter
- They show ownership: “Led” says more than “was part of”.
- They make bullets shorter: one precise verb replaces a whole phrase.
- They lead to results: a strong verb naturally sets up a number or outcome.

How to write a strong bullet point
Action verb + what you did + result (with a number)
“Automated weekly invoice reports in Excel, saving the finance team 5 hours a week.”
- Vary your verbs. Don’t start five bullets in a row with “Managed”.
- Use past tense for previous jobs and present tense for your current role.
- Add numbers wherever you can: percentages, money, time saved, team size, volume.
