WORK EXPERIENCE SECTION(S) OF THE RESUME:

Names to consider for the heading: Healthcare Experience | Professional Experience | Relevant Experience | Professional History

  • Job title for each position held should be in BOLD and possibly listed 1st depending upon your formatting.

List out positions that you have held within the past 7-10 years; starting with the most recent. If you have held more than 3 or 4 positions in the past 10 years, you may want to include just the past two or three. (Exception: Military Experience is always listed on the resume no matter how dated)

  • Create 3-5 accomplishment statements under each position you have listed. Stay away from creating a “list of job duties” or responsibilities. Start each bullet point with an action verb; however be careful not to start them all with the same one! If you are still in the position, then your action verb should be in the present tense; if you have left the position, then the action verb should be past tense (i.e. Manage vs. Managed)

Resumes are marketing tools. Think transferable and field-related skills when creating your document. Be specific and intentional with what you include, and please remember to always be truthful about your accomplishments and work history.

Do develop a strong accomplishment statement you want to state what you did; how or why you did it and what benefit came from it. It should tell the employer what you did with the responsibilities that you were given. Take a look at the 2 examples below. The second one definitely makes a bigger impact!

  • Maintained accurate patient orders
  • Maintained accurate patient/newborn orders to uphold and sustain accurate billing and registration information, and allowed physician/nurses to diagnose and treat appropriately

Action-Benefit statements use your accomplishments and experi- ence to demonstrate the positive impact you can have on a company’s bottom line. An Action-Benefit statement consists of:

Action:

A job responsibility or specific action that you took when faced with a situa- tion, problem, or opportunity that enabled you to achieve a positive result.

Benefit:

The positive result or benefit to the organization, such as an increase in revenue, a reduction in costs, streamlined processes or systems, or improved morale.

An Action-Benefit statement might read “Analyzed declining sales and developed cam-

paign that increased orders by 30% in less than one month.” This statement describes the situation or challenge you faced (declining sales), the Action you took (developed a campaign), and the Benefit of your actions (a 30% increase in orders). Always quantify or qualify the accom- plishments and achievements described in your Action-Benefit statement.

When you are quantifying results, consider the impact of your work in measurable terms and include the numbers, percents, dollars, and other values that represent your experience in the best possible light.

Alternatively, when you are qualifying accomplishments, consider describing

the process, depicting the environment, and including the personal characteristics that a future employer would consider valuable. When writing an Action-Benefit statement, it is unnecessary to provide details on how you solved the problem. You can provide this infor- mation at the interview. Focus on the results as opposed to the process. If your Action-Benefit statements are powerful enough, employers will invite you in for an interview just to see how you achieved the results.

Your bullet points should promote your transferable skills, demonstrate your ability to make an impact,
and show a history of success. Below are step-by-step directions to help you get started:
1. Determine 5-7 skills that are most relevant to your target audience
• MBA level skills include:
• Analytics / Problem Solving / Research
• Communication / Interpersonal skills
• Leadership / Teamwork / Mentorship
• Quantitative skills
• Creativity / Innovation
2. Identify your key accomplishments and list key skills used in each accomplishment
• What did you create/build? What ideas/concepts did you develop?
• Did you direct people or projects?
• What problems were you able to solve? What challenges did you overcome?
• What were you most proud of at your previous job? Did you receive any awards or promotions?
3. STAR Method (Situation-Task-Action-Result) - Pick the accomplishments which
demonstrate 5-7 relevant skills. List the following for each accomplishment
• What you did (describe the situation that you were in or the task that you needed to accomplish)
• How you did it (actions you took)
• The impact of your actions (results)
4. Write each bullet point in a manner that demonstrates the situation or task, the action taken and the result of your accomplishment
• Start bullet points with active verbs
• Pick the first words of each bullet point wisely; start with your relevant skill or your impact
• Eliminate any jargon that is not relevant, but incorporate relevant jargon
• Quantify (#, %, $) your impact. Did sales/profits increase? Did costs decrease? Was time saved? Did you exceed your goals? If so, by how much?
• Provide context/scope when quantifiable results are not available. Consider the intended impact or results vs. last year or vs. your peers. Include whether or not you received any commendation.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE AND/OR SKILLS SECTION:
Provided By : One or the other must be on your resume!
  • If you’re RN to BSN (and higher) then you do NOT need to have your clinicals listed when you’re experienced, I would recommend a comprehensive skills section. The exception to this rule would be if gained experience through a clinical site in a particular area of nursing you would like to work in.
  • ABSN clinicals should be listed! You should list your clinical sites and the skills that you learned while completing your clinicalexperience.
  • Some people like to include the type of nursing and how many hours were complete at each clinical site. If you have little to no professional experience, you may want to consider creating a separate skills section from your clinical experience section.
    • If you do: Names to consider for the heading - Professional Skills | Specialized Skills |Core Skills & Competencies |Professional Qualifications |Specialized Skills & Qualifications | Healthcare Skills and Qualifications
